May 2021

We’re now into the last couple of months of our preschool year at Hatch Warren Under Fives – the year has flown by.

Over the last few weeks, and up until the end of the school year, we are putting lots of work into school readiness for our older children. Each day we are having fun with activities to promote number recognition, personal and social skills, listening and understanding, and health and self care to name a few.

One of our themes this term has been transport, we spent two weeks with our role-play corner as a garage and the children used lots of tools to fix the cars and bikes.

The children also loved driving toy cars through the gloopy messy tray and then taking them outside to clean up at the car wash – great fun! And on the art tables the children painted some great traffic light pictures. Staying with the theme of transport, we learnt the Makaton signs for boat and train. We plan our themes around the children’s interests each week, so coming up next we have dinosaurs.

In our rising 5 sessions we have continued with the Gruffalo and the children have been very creative with making Gruffalo face sandwiches, using different fruits and cheeses. We also set up a preschool cinema to watch the Gruffalo movie – complete with popcorn and milkshake! Next up in Rising Fives is Jack and the Beanstalk so we’ll be growing beans and measuring big and small.

We were very excited to have our first visitor into preschool for a very long time! The lollipop lady came into visit and taught the children all about crossing the road safely.  The children asked some great questions and practised crossing on our very own zebra crossing.
